Books: I am reading "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond. It is a remarkable book. It looks at the delelopment of societies and why some societies are so much further advanced and others are behind. For example, why are America, Britain and China such global giants and why are there still people in Australia who still use primitive stone tools and live as hunter gathers? It looks at the development of agriculture and then the development of writing, technoligial, disease etc etc. It takes into account different factors affecting each area of the world, and asks why some areas were so much further ahead right from the beginning. For example, the Fertile Cresent. They were the earliest to abandon the hunter gather lifestyle and begin farming. But why did it happen there instead of in Northern Europe, or Australia, or South Africa? It is extremely interesting, and dense with information and factual evident to support the thesis and hyphothesis which Diamond puts forth in the book. I find myself gaining a broad understand of the development of agriculture and the reasons why civilizations developed, while at the same time learning individual stories of world history and cultures. I could rant about this forever. It really is a remarkable book (it did win the Pulitzer Prize). I would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging read and is ready to soak up a lot of information. It is taking me forever to read because there is so much information there that I just want to take advantage and understand it as best I can. Although it is written very well, and is easy to understand and follow. A fantastic book...
Movies: Watched V for Vendetta on Sunday. Really really really enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that I walk away from a little freaked out, because although its fiction, it seems all too real... the idea of America landing itself in Civil war and Britain turning into a totalitarian regime... Plus, the acting was decent- Portman was good. I thought Weaving pulled of the character of "V" well. Overall I really enjoyed the style of the movies and the themes. It was very well done. And I thought I was going to kill the girl in the audiance who answered her cell phone 4x during the movie...
In other News: "Mall guy" has a girlfriend. At least he was sighted walking around the mall holding hands with a girl. So he is no longer an option, except as a friend.
However, I did go out with the guy who I gave my number too. He finally added me to his msn list yesterday, so we were chatting online, and we ended up going out for a beer last night. This guy was awesome... I know this sounds corney, but it felt like I have know him forever. I felt so comfortable with him, and we just chatted about all sorts of things... we have simliar tastes in movies and music. And it was overall just an awesome evening. I think he has a mutual interest... when we parted last night, we made plans to go out for drinks at O'Leary's on Wednesday nite, then he said "and maybe we could get together and watch a movie tomorrow night". And he's already told me he's going to take me out for dinner sometime... Hehe... I feel like a giddy school girl.
