New Reflections on learning French: Obviously I am not naive and will not say "why should I learn french". However, I am wondering to myself, why would I spend extra money on learning french if I am going to come back to Saint John, a city where one does not use very much french. Therefore, chances are, the whole "if you don't use it you lose it" rule will probably kick in and I will end up forgetting most of what I would learn if I took a french course right now. (Unless I got a job working with tourism- albeit, that would probably be a decent reason *TO* learn french- tourism jobs tend to pay half decent.) As a comment was made on my last post that actually tapped into something that I had not mentioned. I have considered taking a French course in Montreal. There's an independant language school (independant because it is not part of a university or college) that I've been looking at. It would cost approximently $1000 to take four weeks of French language training. Also, why should I spend extra money learning French, when, if I'm going to UNBSJ, I can probably take some french courses that contribute to my degree. It sounds like a good idea, and it's something I've been thinking of doing, but I'm just not sure if it sounds logical in the long run. My reason for wanting to go to France to learn french.... well it just seemed like a good excuse to go to France. I can make more justification for flying across the Atlantic Ocean if there is direct education involved. However, it does seem a little illogical to go to France to learn a language that I can learn right here in my own backyard (one of the benifits of living in the only bilingual province). Maybe I'll save the money and wait till next year or the year after and go to South America to learn Spanish... (Not next year- I want to do the UNB trip to Rome next year.) So I've looked at the UNBSJ calender, and I think I can get into a couple Summer classes that run from about May 2 to June 16 (I'm thinking Human Geography and perhaps intro to German or intro to Sociology). Which is perfect because they'll be finished in time for me to fly to Toronto and get into Stratford for July 2nd. Which means I will still go head with subletting my Montreal apartment and look for a job in Saint John. And as long as the job will give me six weeks off to go to Stratford, than I can potentially work the job straight through the next school year. Yup, I really do over think things... It was suggested to me once that I should go into Philisophy. And in regards to the Film Program... I am still looking into it. But I'm leaning toward spending a year at UNBSJ first, and then transferring to Concordia in my second year. And I probably will set up a meeting with someone to do with the program when I next go up to Montreal.
