There is a God- I'm finished Wuthering Heights (for the second fucking time!)! Now I'm being stressed out over a huge research paper I have for co-op. I'm writing it on the changes in technical theatre, and how technology have affected the art of theatre. I'm going to bring up the point that the big money making shows in the world right now are more focused on the special effects and sets than on the actual acting. That's why people pay big bucks to go see The Lion King and shows at Stratford because they know they are going to be visually stunning. As opposed to Elizabethan England where all the actors had to tell the story was a costume and their talent and performance. I believed that technology has made the actors performance less important; acting is overshadowed by the sets, costumes, lights, sounds, and special effects made possible by todays technology.
I also will make a point about the fact that theatre is slowly dying out and film is taking it's place. I will always remember when I heard Richard Monette say this past summer about theatre audiences "They're dying!!" And it's true. My generation doesn't go to live theatre, they go to movie theatres. However, some famous plays make the transition from stage to film easily. Also, my point about the acting being overshadowed by the special effects if displayed in film as well. Look at The Matrix and Lord of the Rings. There is nothing astounding about any of the performances seen in those movies. It's all about the special effects. The art of acting is being lost due to technology.
Blah blah blah... now I just need to transpose that into a 4000 word research paper. Oh joy.
