I auditioned for Shakespeare yesterday. I was the first brave soul up (I figured someone has to break the ice), only I did a really shitty job of presenting my monologue. I did Juliet's speech "The clock struck nine when I did send the nurse...". Only I really wasn't mentally pulled together, so it ended up coming out really fast, I missed three lines, and I didn't put much emotion into it at all. My friend told me that it definitely wasn't my best performance, but it wasn't my worst.
Then everyone else did their speeches... if people didn't have anything prepared the director got them to read a speech from the balcony scene. Once everyone finished, she got up and said basically "Unless you understand the text yourself, it's hard to make the audience understand. (I agree totally with this) I realize Shakespeare is hard to understand, so I'm going to read the speech the way it supposed to sound so you can understand it." Then after she read it, she got each of the auditioners to read the speech again. NEVER EVER have I had a director do that. In fact, one of my favourite directors pratically refuses to say the lines for an actor, because it takes away from the actors interpretation and turns it into imitation of the director. So I was completely shocked when she did this. In fact, to be quite honest I was repulsed. It's all fine and dandy that she spoke a bit about the type of character Juliet is (although I disagree with her being stupid, because Shakespeare didn't write her as being stupid, and she has as much education as a girl could have at that time). That is okay because it give the actor an idea of the way the director wants her Juliet played. Oh well.....
The director wanted a few of us to come back to the auditions again today afterschool. She told us to work on "characterization". I spoke to Captain last night, and she helped me find the right direction with my speech (without saying it for me... actually I retake that, she did say three words, emphasising how I must paint a picture with the words, but that's not the same as saying "this is how the speech is supposed to sound".). So I'm hoping to go back today and do the speech again ("the clock struck nine...") adding colour to it, and painting that picture for the audience.
Oh, I'm sure the director will be okay. I'll just wait and see where/if I'm cast and go from there.
