Next I saw two one act plays performed in the new Studio Theatre. I can guarantee you, everyone I know would drool over this theatre. It was small with a thrust stage resembling that of the Festival Theatre, with a very intimate enviorment- it seats only 278 people. The seats were positioned on a steep incline, making it so each seat was excellent to see from. Mmm... it was wonderful. The first of the two one act plays was "High Gravel Blind" by Paul Dunn. This play had me on the edge of my seat- it was about a father who had abandoned his son when he was only eight. In the play the father comes back to meet his son many years later, and the son hides his identity and says that the son had committed sucicide a short time ago. It had an excellent mix of comidic moments, and tear jerking moments. It completely engulfed me into this disarranged and comfused family.
The second one act play, "Eternal Hydra", I couldn't stand... in fact this was the only play I really wish I could have left. The play itself I can't quite describe, the block was very flat and boring, and overall I seriously thought I was going to fall asleep in it (many of my class actually did fall asleep...) Just thinking about it makes me frustrated because that's how much I didn't enjoy it.
Anyway... "All's Well That Ends Well" was marvellous! (Although I had horrible seats... back row of the festival theatre... yuck!) They kept the Festival Stage pratically unchanged for this production. The highlight of this show was seeing William Hutt as the King of France. I was amazed at how an actor can appear onstage and immediately have their presence fill the entire room. When he came onstage the first time the entire audience applauded- it was chilling to feel the enthusium and spark in the air caused by this one actor. Wow...
More plays later...
