MOVIE: Gosford Park **** I watched Gosford Park on Saturday evening (on DVD), and I must say that thinking back to it, it stands in my memory as a blur or images, costumes, and music. I did enjoy the movie, I can say that much- it helps that I have a love for that particular time period ('30's) because of it's music and fashion. The plot itself seemed rather unimportant in the entire experience for me. The mere fact that the people had all gathered for a weekend hunting party hosted by Sir William McCordle (Michael Gambon) and his wife Lady Sylvia (Kristin Scott Thomas) in the country seems irrelevent to what I enjoyed about the movie. And yes, there was a man murdered and the whole whodunnit aspect of things, but really I was more captivated by the characters themselves, and the contrasting values and aspects of the people "Above Stairs" and "Below Stairs". Above Stairs you meet a countess, a WWI hero, an American film producer and a British idol. Then you met their counterparts below the stairs... and quickly discover that the many valets and maids may not be as content in their position as it is thought to be. It was here that I took pleasure in the movie, learning about each character and discovering what makes them diverse to the other characters.
I must also put in a note that I very much enjoyed the costuming for this movie. The dresses of the women Above Stairs were beautiful and contributed to the setting and time of the movie. Their style was reminiscent of the time just following the height of the "Flapper" era, and leading into the "Swing" era. The dresses and hair styles brough back images of Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo. Truly wonderful.
The movie overall was very high pace and I found it to be enjoyable and entertaining with a colourful mixture of characters and personalities.
