...and I'm home again, back in Saint John... although on my way to Saint John I went through a bit of airport hell. My flight which was supposed to depart at 1:45 was delayed because the piolet wasn't there... so it was delayed one hour... then a second hour... and finally a third hour... finally after switching terminals and gates and all that shit, I departed Toronto at 4:30. Gah... luckily life occasionally does things to remind you how small the world is, and one of my teachers, Mr. Theobald, was taking the same flight back to Saint John with his son. Therefore I had someone to help me along as I felt lost in the maze of the Pearson Airport.
I swear the moment I stepped back into my house I said to my parents- "can I go back next year?" Startford was truely amazing. So amazing I don't know where to start...
The plays: I saw ten of the festivals productions while in Stratford, all of which were wonderful. The three parts of Henry VI had been cut and made into only two plays: "Revenge in France" and "Revolt in England". Besides the fact that I was confused for most of the peformance just trying to figure out who was who and how each were related and who loved who and who hated who and so forth (see, confusing isn't it??). So, besides that the productions were wonderful. They were done on the Tom Patterson Stage, which is a thurst stage with a very intimate audiance arrangement. On the stage a second level was constucted out of a metal like frame, giving oppertunity for acting to be above and below, and for actors to climb the metal frame, etc. The fight sequences in this production were most imprssive and it was very high energy. In the first half of "Revenge in England" there were 14 fights! (Quoted from Brad Rudy, the festival fight captain.) In "Revenge in France" Joan la Purcelle was played by Michelle Giroux and she portrayed her with a very masculine quality. One of the most intersting scenes in the producion was when Joan is approached by voices or spirits of sorts. This was done with a blacklight effect- the actors all had skeleton outlines on their armous which appeared when the black lights came on. Joan's face was also painted with the black light paint, thus illumiating it during this scene.
More plays... "The Threepenny Opera" was very well done, although I personally did not like the play itself to begin with. This happened mostly because it was different from what I expected... I expected a more light hearted production, but discovered the show was very dark and showed the hardships of life. The play is directed at the audiance to display the aspects of life on the streets and what these beggers are faced with. It was well done however (this will get redundant because all the productions were well done...)
More plays tomorrow...
